When you make products that effect ~30 million paychecks at a time, changes you make in how people work have a tremendous effect. When I got a call about a position working on ADP’s health care product, my only reason for considering it was the opportunity to gather competitive intel. But, after speaking with the folks from ADP, I discovered that they were in a transition. I heard ADP’s CEO, Carlos Rodriguez, wanted his legacy to be transitioning ADP from a service company that uses technology to a technology company that uses service.

When I started, we recently opened our first innovation lab in Chelsea, NY and I was hire #2 to make this happen in LA. We went from having literally no product management to having one of the best product teams I’ve ever had the pleasure to work with, and our products show it. We found our niche when it comes to hiring the best people to work on our new projects. We discovered that the most talented people working in tech were sick of working on projects that showed little value. They’d ask themselves why they were working on a new feature or the next growth hack that wasn’t making an impact in people’s day to day lives.

I had started 3 businesses, helped create many successful products, learned to crystalize culture during growth mode, and built cultures of innovation from the ground up. I felt like I was in full stride and getting close to the top of my game.
